INTENT:

What are we trying to achieve with our curriculum?

Our curriculum at St Peter’s has been developed with the engagement and progress of our children in mind.

It has been based on the national curriculum (2014) and designed to maximise learning opportunities which build year on year.

Our curriculum is underpinned by our Christian values and our St Peter’s way which focuses on key learning behaviours.

The focus of our teaching and learning is to prepare children to become autonomous learners and develop the knowledge and skills which is not only meaningful in school but is relevant in all aspects of their lives.

At St Peter’s we follow a Learning Journey model which adds a rich and engaging dimension to all curriculum strands. By using an immersive approach which allows children to explore more deeply across the subjects, we ensure that the learning is meaningful, engaging and encourages progress towards independent study.

How do we deliver our curriculum?

The curriculum is designed to cater for the needs and interests of a full range of learners.

We provide exciting and memorable experiences to enhance the Learning Journey engagement. These experiences encourage children to get excited about their learning.

Through our robust curriculum, we support pupils to reach a high standard of literacy and maths skills through Quality First teaching and the application of these skills to learning across the curriculum.

Subject leaders ensure that knowledge and skills are taught progressively so that children build on what they already know and understand

At St Peter’s we allow children to achieve depth to their learning by using an immersive approach that explores topics using all areas of the curriculum.

We understand that children need the essential social and emotional skills in order to maximise their potential. Teachers value PHSE and ensure it is given time in the curriculum, but also embed this in other Learning Journeys throughout the year.

All staff in school use the St Peter’s way to develop positive learning behaviours that encourage children to begin to learn independently.

Our curriculum promotes positive values so they are respectful of other people and their beliefs, views and opinions

We will provide opportunities for them to link their learning to the local community and encourage children to be caring, responsible and active citizens who positively contribute to the local and wider community and environment.

Teachers have high expectations for all children and ensure all children have the support and intervention that they need to be successful.

What difference is our curriculum making to pupils?

Our curriculum inspires a positive approach to learning for all pupils. Pupils leave St Peter’s C of E primary School with a secure understanding of the academic content of the national curriculum; with the understanding of how to be socially, morally, spiritually and culturally responsible and aware; how to make positive contributions to the local community and how to endeavour to be the best that they can be.

We seek to promote a ‘love of learning in a distinctively Christian environment’ for all of our school family. In the same way that St Peter was nurtured by Jesus and allowed to grow and flourish as a leader, we aspire to help all of our pupils to:

feel safe, valued and listened to
be tolerant and inclusive
feel empowered to achieve, regardless of their starting point
become an active independent learner with the skills and values to make a successful transition to the next stage in their education.
develop their talents through our creative curriculum.
be confident in their use of IT

The aim at St Peter’s is to provide opportunities for children to develop as caring and confident learners who are inspired and inspire others to fulfil their potential, as well as providing a positive contribution to their community and the wider society. Our curriculum is rooted in our Christian vision.

We encourage and promote Christian values through the experience we offer to all of our children.

The Bible says in 1Peter 3-8:

‘Live in harmony with one another, be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble’.
