At St. Peter’s, we aim to give children the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century. The curriculum covers key areas which will support children to make informed choices now and in the future around their health, safety, wellbeing, relationships, and financial matters and will support them in becoming confident individuals and active members of society.
The discrete teaching of PSHE from the Kapow scheme of work ensures that children are equipped with knowledge and skills in five key areas: Family and relationships, Health and wellbeing, Safety and the changing body, Citizenship and Economic wellbeing. The additional theme of Identity is added in year 6. The Kapow scheme of work covers the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance, including the non-statutory sex education. The scheme also covers wider PSHE learning, in line with the requirement of the National Curriculum, and promotes the four fundamental British values which reflect life in modern Britain (Democracy; Rule of Law; Respect & Tolerance and Individual Liberty). Our Quality PSHE and RSE teaching is an important element in helping our school to carry out our duty of care with regards to safeguarding. The DfE’s statutory ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education (Sep 2020)’ guidance states that ‘Governing bodies and proprietors should ensure that children are taught about safeguarding, including online safety’.
At St. Peter’s children gain important PSHE knowledge and understanding through our St. Peter’s Way which promotes and celebrates our 5 values: wisdom, endurance, compassion, creativity and respect. Website link: Vision and Values | St Peter’s Church of England Primary Academy Our wider school life provides opportunities for children to develop subject specific skills and knowledge as well as promoting personal growth and wellbeing. These opportunities include whole-school collective worship, child mental health week, anti-bullying week, School Council, House Captains, Play Leaders, Peer Mediators and pupil Positivity Ambassadors.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage, PSHE is an integral part of the topic work covered through both discrete lessons and also through scaffolding play and conversations during child-directed learning.
Our supportive, caring ethos provides an environment in which each child is valued and nurtured to achieve their full potential. Our mixed-age classes, house system and Peer Mediators and Play Leaders, working across key stages, promotes friendships between children of different ages within our school and encourages the children to prioritise care for one another within our school. Our St. Peter’s Way also provides a shared language throughout our school which promotes feelings of belonging for pupils. Our school community provides opportunities for children to grow in self-worth and assume positions of responsibility to prepare them for secondary school and further life as a thriving member of society.
